"Veethi thorum Irandoru Palli ……….” - Subramaniya Bharathi

GENESIS OF MAITHREE - TAMBARAM

The verse penned by Bharathiar highlights the importance of education and the necessity of schools in each street to make it accessible to all. If we were to view this verse in today’s’ context, it would hold true for special schools as well.

About 12 years ago, in the year 1997, the driving force behind the establishment of a special school by Maithree in Tambaram was Jyotsana. Jyotsana is a special child residing in Tambaram. The distance from her residence to a special school was a cause for concern. To address this issue, her parents Usha and Ganeshram offered space in their home to start the second special school of Maithree. And thus was born Maithree Special School at Tambaram on 1st June 1997.

The special school that started off with two students and one special educator has now grown to 70 students with 5 special educators, 5 assistant teachers, 2 physiotherapists and 2 vocational instructors. From being a single entity, this special school has now branched off into Ullagaram and East Tambaram

We have an inter disciplinary team whose service includes Special Education, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Pre Vocational Training at Tambaram. We cater to the special needs of children spanning across a very wide range of challenges and also age groups (New born – 18 years).

Special education addresses each student’s individual differences and needs. It helps learners with special needs achieve a higher level of personal self-sufficiency and success in school and community.

Physiotherapy is for helping the children who have challenges with posture and mobility through therapeutic exercises.

Occupational therapy focuses on daily activities, writing, concentration etc. and also on sensory-motor integration.

Pre Vocational training focuses on a work culture for economic empowerment of our students.

Our strength is quality assurance. The usage of standard tools for assessment and periodic evaluation of our students by external evaluators helps us maintain high standards. The relevance of the curriculum, pedagogy and performance are evaluated for each student, because each student’s needs are unique.

The Tambaram special school of Maithree is located within the campus of Valluvar Gurukulam, a mainstream school. Thus Maithree’s Vision of integrating our students into the mainstream is automatically realized.
