GENESIS OF MAITHREE - PERAMBUR
It was 1994. Two children, Mustafa and Mariam, a brother & sister from Perambur, were responsible for the birth of Maithree’s first special school. Their parents Mr. Sirajuddin and Mrs. Hafeesa, would carry them to a special school at Ayanavaram for a one- hour intervention program every week. However, as both of them had profound challenges they could be taken to the center only alternately. As this intervention was insufficient the parents were looking for a facility closer to their residence which would provide them with more help. At this point Prof. Jeyachandran came as a Messiah and introduced them to Maithree. Maithree was then a formally registered association, waiting to take off. Maithree’s first special school was thus born at Perambur in the living room of the Sirajuddins - and along with it the concept of “Take the School to the child”. However, Mustafa and Mariam were there with Maithree only for a few years. God loved them so much that He wanted them back with Him. Probably, God had sent them to this world only to Light the Lamp of Maithree for the sake of hundreds of children like themselves.
The special school that started with 3 students and 1 special educator has now grown to 65 students with 4 special educators, 3 assistant teachers, 1 physiotherapist, 1 occupational therapist and 2 vocational instructors. Because of an ever increasing demand, from being a single entity, this special school branched off into Kolathur in 2001.
We have an inter disciplinary team whose service includes Special Education, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Pre Vocational Training at T.Nagar. We cater to the special needs of children spanning across a very wide range of challenges and also age groups (New born – 18 years).

• Special education addresses each student’s individual differences and needs. It helps learners with special needs achieve a higher level of personal self-sufficiency and success in school and community.
• Physiotherapy is for helping the children who have challenges with posture and mobility through therapeutic exercises.
• Occupational therapy focuses on daily activities, writing, concentration etc. and also on sensory-motor integration.
• Pre Vocational training focuses on a work culture for economic empowerment of our students.
Our strength is quality assurance. The usage of standard tools for assessment and periodic evaluation of our students by external evaluators helps us maintain high standards. The relevance of the curriculum, pedagogy and performance are evaluated for each student, because each student’s needs are unique.

is located within the campus of Valluvar
Gurukulam, a mainstream school. Thus Maithree’s

the mainstream is automatically realized.
