INTRODUCTION TO SPECIAL EDUCATION
THE FELT NEED
To provide special education/training to
children who are mentally retarded.
Research work done across the globe has
proved that early and consistent education
/ training helps children with mental retardation
to enhance their ability levels.
TODAYS SCENARIO
It is estimated that around 2% of the population
in India have some degree of mental retardation
but hardly 5%of them have access to services
like education, training and vocational
training.
Hence it is imperative that early intervention
and consistent training gets the first priority
in the welfare of special children.
MAITHREE ‘S EXPERIENCE
Many parents do not attempt to send their
wards to a special school due to various
difficulties like proximity, commuting long
distances, convenient timing, and dependency
on public transport etc. Parents of children
who have associated motor disability find
it very difficult. A special school in their
vicinity is not only convenient it encourages
them.
Opening many satellite special education
centers within the community has been found
to be very useful and many children are
benefited. As it can be seen from a humble
beginning with 3 children, today over 280
children benefit through these satellite
centers.
